1.Eligibility

I am not sure if I have an eligibility to apply.

There are certain situations that need to be examined over the eligibility prior to the application period. In such a case, please contact the Graduate School Office well in advance.

I will be awarded a bachelor degree from "self-study program" in China. Am I eligible to apply for master's program?

This situation should be examined over the eligibility prior to the application period. In such a case, please contact the Graduate School Office well in advance.

Do you have an age limit to apply?

There is no age limit to apply. However, please be noted that some of the scholarships set the maximum age limit to apply.

I have no langugage skills in Japanese. Do you have a degree program in English?

Master's and Doctoral programs require proficiency in Japanese equivalent to or above the N1 level of Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. There is one exception set in UTIPE program, an International Program in Economics designed for English speaking foreign students. For details, please visit the UTIPE page .

2.Entrance Exams

I live in outside of Japan. Could you tell me the steps to apply?

Firstly get the application package according to the Application Guidance and ask someone residing in Japan to apply since an exam admission tickets are only available at the Graduate School Office or receivable at the address in Japan. Written/Oral exam for the Master Program and Oral exam for the Doctoral program are held at the Hongo Campus in Tokyo respectively. Please ensure to make necessary arrangements on your own. Todai does not assist in applying for visa on coming for the exams.

Could you introduce an academic adviser in Todai prior to the exam(s)?

The entrance exams are evaluated by the submitted documents, a written exam and an oral exam for the Master program, and the submitted documents and oral exam for the Doctoral program hence it is not necessary contact in advance to any faculty members. If I do not pass the entrance exam(s), can I apply for the Foreign Research Student Program?

The foreign Research Student Program is designed for candidates already enrolled in a Doctoral program or equivalents outside of Japan. The program is most appropriate for students whose theses necessitate research in Japan and is not designed for preparation for entering a Master/Doctoral program.

3.Written and Oral Exams

Does the entrance exam make special consideration to foreign students?

There is no special consideration to foreign students. However, foreign students are entitled to make the following choices in the written examination of master's entrance examinations (some students may not be applied based on one's personal history) to choose Japanese in the foreign language exam part to answer in the written exam in English.

Are there any special entrance exams for foreign students?

Yes. The entrance exams for International Program in Economics (UTIPE) are special entrance exams targeted for foreign students living outside of Japan. For details, please go to the UTIPE page and follow the instructions.

If the recent TOEFL scores marked higher than the one already submitted to the Graduate School office, is it possible to remove and replace the latter with the former one?

Once the application documents are submitted, it is not acceptable to remove and replace them with any documents.

I am an English native. Is it possible to choose English as a foreign language in the exam?

Yes, you can choose English as long as an official TOEFL Examinee Score Report is submitted. In other words, those who choose English as a foreign language in the exam should arrange to submit an official TOEFL Examinee Score Report. The foreign language exam with one of the following choices such as German, France and Japanese (only if one's status is recognized as a foreign student), is conducted as a part of written exam and English, on the other hand, does not particularly have the time in the written exam. The foreign language ability is evaluated based on TOEFL scores. Please note all the applicants for the Finance major must submit TOEFL scores.

What language is used in the Oral exam?

In general, it is conducted in Japanese but any other languages may be used based on the theme of an examinee's research.

4.Others

I have plural nationalities including Japanese citizenship. Am I regarded as a foreign student?

Generally speaking, an applicant with Japanese citizenship is automatically categorized as a Japanese applicant. However, the categorization varies according to one's personal background. Those who have more than two nationalities including Japanese citizenship may contact well in advance to the Graduate School Office.

I am selected as a Japanese Government's Scholarship (MEXT). Should I take entrance exam(s) in order to enroll a master's or a doctoral program?

Yes, you need to take the entrance exam(s) to enroll in a program.

There is no transfer student system in this faculty.

Foreign Research Student Program is opened to a student under PhD program and it is not opened to the under graduate level.
