Overview

This page explains how to enroll at the Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo, as a MEXT scholarship student (Embassy Recommendation), a MEXT/Chinese government scholarship student or a Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association scholarship student.
If you would like to enroll at the undergraduate program of the University of Tokyo as a MEXT student, ask for details at the Japanese diplomatic mission in your country. As for the Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association scholarship program, contact the said association.

Enroll at Graduate School of Economics as a Master's program student

For MEXT (Embassy Recommendation) and MEXT/Chinese government scholarship students

To apply for our master's program under this category, the applicant needs to complete application at the Japanese Embassy/consulate and application at this graduate school. As for procedures for application at the Japanese Embassy/consulate, contact them by yourself.

Application at this graduate school has two steps: 1.Application for Master's program and 2.The government-sponsored scholarship application at this graduate school.

1.Application for Master's program
Complete application procedures for Master's program. For the application period for the master's program, refer to its application guidelines. Documents necessary to submit differ for each department.
2. The government-sponsored scholarship application at this graduate school
Complete the application through the designated site (will be open in late June). Application period is from June 2024 to the deadline which will be set by MEXT (announced later).
  You must upload all documents below:
  (a) Passing Certificate of the First Screening issued by the Japanese diplomatic mission
  (b) All the submitted documents returned from the mission with their official confirmation stamped.

Only the applications which have completed these two steps above will be considered.

Notice: Applicable only for April enrollments.

For Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association scholarship students

To apply for our master's program under this category, the applicant needs to complete application at Taipei Office of The Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association and application at this gradaute school. As for procedures for application at Taipei Office of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, contact them by yourself.

Application at this graduate school has two steps: 1.Application for Master's program and 2.The government-sponsored scholarship application at this graduate school.

1.Application for Master's program
Complete application procedures for Master's program. For the application period for the master's program, refer to its application guidelines. Documents necessary to submit differ for each department.
2. The government-sponsored scholarship application at this graduate school
Complete the application through the designated site (will be open in late June). Application period: From October 24, 2024 to October 31, 2024, 17:00 (JST)
You must upload all documents below:
  (a) Passing Certificate of the Second Screening issued by the association
  (b) All the submitted documents returned from the association with their official confirmation stamped.

Only the applications which have completed these two steps above will be considered.

Notice: Applicable for April enrollments for all departments and October enrollments for Department of Economics.

Enroll at Graduate School of Economics as a non-degree student

For MEXT and MEXT/Chinese government scholarship students

To apply for our research student program under this category, the applicant needs to complete application at the Japanese Embassy/consulate and application at this graduate school.

Applicants to this category are limited to those who are willing to advance to our degree programs after enrollment as non-degree students.

Application at this graduate school: Complete the government-sponsored scholarship application through the designated site (will be open in late June) at this graduate school. Application period is from June 2024 to the deadline which will be set by MEXT (announced later).
You must upload all documents below:
  (a) Passing Certificate of the First Screening issued by the Japanese diplomatic mission
  (b) All the submitted documents returned from the mission with their official confirmation stamped
  (c) Application thesis (single-authored, written solely by the applicant)
    Applicant's graduation thesis, Master's thesis or a research paper and its summary (all in English or Japanese)
  (d) Department of Economics: Scores of TOFEL (taken after October 1, 2022) and GRE (taken after October 1, 2022)
    or
    Other than Department of Economics: Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Certificate of Result and Scores (N1)

Only the applications which have completed uploading all the necessary documents during the application period will be considered.

For Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association scholarship students

To apply for our research student program under this category, the applicant needs to complete application at Taipei Office of The Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association and application at the Graduate School of Economics.

Applicants to this category are limited to those who are willing to advance to our degree programs after enrollment as non-degree students.

Application at this graduate school: Complete the government-sponsored scholarship application through the designated site (will be open in late June) at this graduate school. Application Period: From October 24, 2024 to October 31, 2024, 17:00 (JST).
You must upload all documents below:

  (c) Application thesis (single-authored, written solely by the applicant)
    Applicant's graduation thesis, Master's thesis or a research paper and its summary (all in English or Japanese)
  (d) Department of Economics: Scores of TOFEL (taken after October 1, 2022) and GRE (taken after October 1, 2022)
    or
    Other than Department of Economics: Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Certificate of Result and Scores (N1)
