Evaluation criteria for conferring degrees and the submission of Master's theses in the Graduate School of Economics are as follows:

I. Criteria for conferring a degree

Master's program: A thesis submitted by a candidate that indicates a discovery and demonstration of a significant research topic in a specialized field of economics and business management. The candidate is considered to possess the ability to carry out research activities in their chosen field or the ability to assume responsibilities in a profession in which highly specialized knowledge is required.

II. In Writing Master's theses

When you write a master's thesis or a doctoral dissertation, you should keep in mind your moral responsibility toward it. You should also read through the following "Guidelines for Writing Research Papers and Theses" and "Code of Conduct for Scientific Research" carefully and make a signed statement that you will observe the rules including those stipulated in them when you submit your master's thesis.

III. Submission of Theses

Master's program

Students who wish to submit a master's thesis must be enrolled in a master's program for more than one year and have earned 16 or more credits as stipulated in Article 9 of "The University of Tokyo Rules for the Graduate School of Economics." A student who wishes to have the length of their program reduced should refer to Article 20 of "The University of Tokyo Rules for the Graduate School of Economics" and must consult the Graduate School Office.

Submission period

Registration of dissertation title: Early November (April Enrolment) / early May (September Enrolment) of each academic year.

Master's theses: Early January (April Enrolment)/ late June (September Enrolment) of each academic year.
※ UTIPE Students must write theses in English.

Supervisors

Students in a master's program must submit a request naming the supervisor of his/her choice during the winter semester (April Enrolment) / the summer semester (October Enrolment) of their first year. The Education Council will review the request and designate a supervisor by the end of March (April Enrolment) / September (October Enrolment). Some supervisors may have designated prerequisite courses for accepting a request for supervision. Refer to the notice board before registering.
