Certificates for Graduate Students

A.Variety of Certificates

※ [For Alumni] If you wish us to issue any certificate, ask us to do so by postal mail. ※

The Graduate Section issues the following certificates::

  • 1.ZAIGAKU SHOMEISHO
    • a)SHUSHI ZAIGAKU SHOMEISHO
      certifies that he/she is a student of the Master's program, the Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo.
    • b)HAKASE ZAIGAKU SHOMEISHO
      certifies that he/she is a student of the Ph.D. program, the Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo.
  • 2.SEISEKI SHOMEISHO
    • a)SHUSHI SEISEKI SHOMEISHO
      certifies the records of the courses he/ she studied during his/her stay at Master's program of the Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo.
    • b)HAKASE SEISEKI SHOMEISHO
      certifies the records of the courses he/she studied during his/her stay at Ph.D. program of the Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo.
  • 3.SHURYO SHOMEISHO
    • a)SHUSHI SHURYO SHOMEISHO
      certifies that he/she was conferred the degree of Master of Economics from the Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo.
    • b)HAKASE SHURYO SHOMEISHO
      certifies that he/she was conferred the degree of Doctor of Economics from the Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo.
  • 4.GAKUI SHUTOKU SHOMEISHO
    HAKASE GAKUI SHUTOKU SHOMEISHO
    certifies the date when he/she was conferred the degree of Doctor of Economics and the number of the Degree that he/she was conferred.
  • 5.TAIGAKU SHOMEISHO
    • a)SHUSHI TAIGAKU SHOMEISHO
      certifies that he/she withdrew from Master' s program, the Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo.
    • b)HAKASE TAIGAKU SHOMEISHO
      certifies that he/she withdrew from Ph.D. program, the Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo.
  • 6.Others

B. Days to Issue

According to the Graduate Section, certificates in Japanese require two days for processing. Certificates in English require about one week.

C. How to Apply for Certificates

C-1. in person (For alumni: Please apply certificates only by postal mail.)

Please visit the Undergraduate Section and/or the Graduate Section and complete the necessary application procedures. Please be sure to bring an official ID card with your photo (e.g., Driver's license, passport, Indeividual Number Card (front side only: notification cards are not acceptable), student ID card (current student of the University of Tokyo), Residence Card (Zairyuu Card)) with you when you visit the sections. The sections issue certificates and gives them only to the person whom they confirm is/was our student.

C-2. by mail

Please apply for the certificate(s) by postal mail. An application sent by e-mail and/or fax will NOT be processed. You can NOT ask a staff member of the office to issue any certificates by phone. Please Download the form PDF from here.

Please be sure to send a copy of official ID card with your photo (e.g., Driver's license, passport, Individual Number Card (front side only: notification cards are not acceptable), student ID card (current student of the University of Tokyo), Residence Card (Zairyuu Card)) also with your request form.

Please refer to the JAPAN POST for your postage.

If you are unable to download the form, please provide a written request in English or Japanese with the following items include::

  1. your name (when you apply for certificates in English, your English name is also needed.)
  2. your current address and phone number
  3. which certificate you would like to obtain (e.g., SHUSHI SEISEKI SHOMEISHO in Japanese, HAKASE SHURYO SHOMEISHO in English, etc.)
  4. how many pieces you would like to obtain.
  5. the reason why you would like to obtain the certificate(s)
  6. the name of the institution where you will submit the certificate(s)
  7. the dates of enrollment and completion or withdrawal
  8. the names of course and program for which you register(ed)

You need to enclose with a copy of your identification (drivers license, passport and the like) and written request a self-addressed envelope and sufficient Japanese postage stamps if returning to a Japanese address or if returning to an address outside Japan. IRC (International Reply Coupon) is also acceptable for sending to an address outside Japan. One IRC is equivalent to 160 yen in Japan. (Only IRC sold in Japan from October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2023 are worth 130 yen each.) Mailing cost differs depending on the total weight of the certificates you would like to obtain. If you can not prepare Japanese postage stamps or the IRC please ask to our office before sending the application.

C-3. by proxy

Procedure by a proxy: Add to the above documents, proxy needs an official identification (copy acceptable) and proxy letter (free format) with requester's handwritten signature signature. ※Proxy Letter SamplePDF

C-4. Others

If you are applying for the Singapore work visa EP (Employment Pass) or the UK work visa HPI (High Potential Individual), please contact the Graduate School Office in advance by e-mail. Add ot this, please submit the form of REQUEST FOR CERTIFICATION and a copy of official ID card.

D.Verification and Confirmation

In recent days, some companies and/or agencies request us to verify and confirm the certificates that our students submitted for matriculation or employment. We are very sorry to tell you that Undergraduate and Graduate Section can NOT disclose any private information about our present or former students to a third party. Even if the student concedes a disclosure, we can NOT change this rule. This is a formal rule and is strictly enforced without exception. Thank you for your understanding.
